An important part of the IMFG’s mandate is to build expertise in the areas of municipal finance and governance in Canada. The IMFG’s graduate and post-graduate fellowships provide an important link between the Institute’s educational mission and its research objectives by supporting students who are working in this field. The fellowships support academic research in the Institute’s core areas of study, and help to shape Canada’s next generation of municipal finance and governance experts, whether they work in government, the private sector, or academia.

Each year, the IMFG provides three fellowships. The Post-Doctoral Fellowship provides an annual stipend of C$50,000 to support researchers who have received their PhD and are continuing their studies. The IMFG Graduate Fellowship in Municipal Finance and Governance, and the Blanche and Sandy Van Ginkel Graduate Fellowship in Municipal Finance and Governance each provide C$5,000 to support full-time graduate students undertaking doctoral or master's level work at the University of Toronto.
